Straying From the Sun

I love the sunny days of autumn. More than any other reason I believe that this is why fall is my favorite time of year. You can actually enjoy the sunlight. It isn't too hot to be outside, it doesn't burn you as much. It feels like a companion I guess. It's a reason to be outside instead of a reason to stay away. And the blue September sky... I don't have words for my feelings for that particular shade of blue.

So, I took the opportunity to wear my new dress from Modcloth that I personally think is a very similar shade to that blue September that I love! I paired it with a hand-knit cabled cardigan and tights, because while it was a beautiful day, there was a glorious fall chill in the air. I don't wear coats if I can help it, I stick to sweaters instead. Do you have a preference? I'd love to hear about it!

A First Impression... Or Second. Or Third.

Today was a day I've been waiting for for a long time. I've had terrible trouble since moving to this tiny town finding a place to work, so I've been generously supported by my wonderful boy. It was a mixture of not knowing anyone here (and this place is quaint enough that "who you know" is pretty much everything) and not having a vehicle to drive. But I've applied at nearly fifty places, and had several interviews, so I had started to give up hope.

So you can imagine how crucial today was to me - I had a second interview with a potential employer.

I always dress professionally for interviews and the like, even if they're meant to be informal. I just feel like it makes a better impression. And the weather had to be uncooperative, as usual, and as I walked to the interview I got rained on quite a bit. Luckily I had my raincoat and an umbrella!

In any case I'm glad I dressed more formally, because it felt more official when I was asked to start working on Thursday. I'm very excited. I was doubly excited when I stopped into my local bookstore to treat myself to a new book, and discovered that the store manager there is still seriously considering hiring me as well! Apparently things are looking up.

My Heart Bleeds Red and White

This weekend was ridiculous on all counts. I fell ill, had several quizzes to take, a ton of other homework to do (who knew a beginner's Japanese class would be so difficult?!?), post-surgical kittens to take care of, not to mention a house to re-arrange. So today was a day where I felt like I had no other choice but to slum it up around the house. I don't usually wear pants, but with the fever, I couldn't stay warm, so I opted for these not-quite-corduroy fuzzy cotton pants and my favorite over-sized plaid vintage shirt.

Not to mention today was the Red Wings Hockey game of the pre-season I managed to watch on the television.

I can't help it; I was born and raised to be a hockey fan. So every once in awhile I have to adorn myself with some swag of the team I watch with a near religious fervor.

You won't see posts like this often from me; I wouldn't have left the house in these clothes. But it's nice to know that sometimes, especially when I feel like I'm dying, I still have a grip on my roots.

And of course, Min and River had to play Mama take her pictures!

The Wilds Help You Learn Who You Really Are

There's this beautiful place just down the street from me where a large cement run-off pipe takes the groundwater to one of the lakes I can see from my house. It's this gorgeous place, with overgrown grass, old mossy trees, flowers and wild grapes. It was the perfect place to debut some of my local finds. The colors are a bit somber for the season, but I love how cool they felt on this warm summer day. The skirt is the perfect length for me, and I adore the bag and boots. The tights were merely to keep the weeds off of my legs. I didn't want to take chances on poison ivy.
The pictures are self taken, and some altered a little to show the actual colors. Even in partial shade the sun wiped out all of the color the clothes had. Me, I'm just terribly pale.

British Invasion; Missing in Action

So because I was being lax about my weekly thrift store visits, I've been a little slow with the updates. But! Fear not! I have made a recent visit and it was very successful! It was an end-of-summer-everything's-$1-and buy-one-get-one-free. I made out like a bandit. Pictures to come, of course, once I get a more willing photographer (i.e. my boyfriend Alex. He'll come around. He always does.)

In the meantime I have found some fabulous items online that are definitely on my wish list now. I'm slightly inspired by New York Fashion Week, I'm sure. But you can't deny how great these are!

I am suddenly having a love affair with Peter Pan collars. They are just so classic, so elegant, and so very fun. And isn't this a great color for fall? Still a little bit of summer sunshine peaking through, but still matches the vibrant color the birch trees are going to turn!

Why not pair a pretty little dress like that with adorable little booties like these? They have such a flattering shape, and keep with that same classic-but-fun look.

Finally, I would pair the dress with this gorgeous jacket from Topshop. Yet another UK dealer I wish were more readily available in the states. Throw this over top, and a nice belt around the waist to finish the look, maybe some colored tights... Oh fall, how I love you!

Well, that's it from me tonight. I promise I'll get you some pictures soon, tomorrow if I can manage it. It's time to show you how many great thrift store finds you can discover in the most unlikely places!

A Better Introduction

I just realized I probably should have taken the time to introduce myself, hmm? Well, there isn't much to me really. I'm a student trying to make my way in this great wide world. I have a newfound love of fashion and all things vintage and thrifted, and I have an extremely old love of books, writing, and all forms of art.

Oh yes. And I have two beautiful kittens. This one is River.

I promise I won't update this many times in one night ever again. The fit just took me this evening, and the nearly empty page that is my blog was driving me to madness. But this is better! Now you know me and hopefully I'll get to meet you (well, in a figurative sense) and I think we'll all have a great time.

And who can deny that adorable kitten face?
